JANUARY 1959
Jan 1st Thurs. -8-,cold, snow & wind-Gene's & Mary, Ted's & Sonja & Rays came here for dinner.
Jan 2nd Fri. - 6- to12-, snowing & blowing-Ted's & girls went to Lewistown & Gib went along to sign a note at the bank. Al & I took the Christmas tree down. Gib & Ted got home about 5.
Jan 3rd Sat.-5-, still-I straightened up the house & put the covers on davenport & chair, read & crocheted. Men did chores, pried Al's car out of the mud where it was frozen in. He went to town in evening.
Jan 4th Sun.-8+,still-Men worked on the pickup & took radiator off. Got our car started. I read, dusted & crocheted.
Jan 5th Mon.-28+, nice- Al & I went to Lewistown to get radiator repaired & a battery for the pickup. Had dinner at Gene's & visited the folks. Rays came.
Jan 6th Tues. -42+,cloudy S.W wind in evening-I washed. Men did chores & fixed the pickup. I dampened clothes.
Jan 7th Wed.-43+,clear, still, SE breeze at night-Men did chores, hauled water & worked on small tractor. I baked cake, applesauce nut bread & cookies. Washed my hair.
Jan 8th Thurs.-38+,nice- Men worked on tractor & did chores. I patched & ironed. We all went to Baumans in evening.
Jan 9th Fri.-42+,real nice- I finished ironing in afternoon. Men did chores & worked on the tractor.
Jan 10th Sat.-52+,overcast, mild- I cleaned house & crocheted. Al went to Lewistown about 10AM for tractor repairs. Gib & I put plastic on east kitchen window & garage window.
Jan 11th Sun.-48+,very nice-I baked cookies. Gib did Chores. Al went to Siroky's. We started to Southworths but it was too muddy.
Jan 12th Mon.- 58+,thawed good, dams filling up- Gib & I went to Lewistown in pickup. I cut the folks hair. Gib had some work done on pickup. We had supper at Gene's. Got stuck in mud inside our gate. Al pulled us out.
Jan 13th Tues. -42+,nice cold at night-I cut out my changeable rusted color dress. Men worked on tractor. We went to Legion meeting.
Jan 14th Wed. -10-, cold, light snow- Gib went to Lewistown for repairs. Al worked on lesson & on tractor. I sewed up my dress.
Jan 15th Thurs.-15+, cold- I sewed. Men finished tractor. Wanted to go to Fellowship meeting, but the car wouldn't start.
Jan 16th Fri.-38+,nice, cloudy-I washed some underwear & towels. Baked a cake & cookies & worked on my dress. Max Webster was killed at bridge.
Jan 17th Sat.-42+, clear, nice- I cleaned house. Al went to Lewistown after dinner. Frank & Murna came & stayed for supper.
Jan 18th Sun.-40+, then colder & snow flurries-Richard came about 10AM. I went to church with Rays. Richard left about 5PM.
Jan19th Mon.- 0, snow flurries- We all went to Lewistown to Max Websters funeral. Stayed for supper at Murna's. Mrs Southworth & Mrs. Martin were there too. Got home about 10:45.
Jan 20th Tues.-7-to zero-I finished my dress, crocheted & read. Men did chores & went to Roy for oil cake. Alice & Harold came in evening.
Jan 21st Wed.- 18+,light snow-I patched Gib's coat & crocheted. Men brought the cattle home & cut out some to keep here & feed & put the rest over south of the road again. Conolly's came in evening.
Jan 22nd Thurs.-16+, light snow- Al worked on his car & did chores. I patched Al's shirt. Men fed cattle.
Jan 23rd Fri.-32+,snow, nice- Al worked on his car & did chores. I finished crocheted doll clothes for Sharon & Ronnie. Cut out pants for Gary.
Jan 24th rain,- 16+ to 10+ to below zero, snow, colder,-I cleaned house. Men did chores. l didn't go to town. Baked cake & cookies
Jan 25th Sun.- 24+ to 5 below, nice- We all went to church this evening. Allen shot a doe with a lump on her head.
Jan 26th Mon.- 32+,nice-Men hauled water & fed cattle straw. I patched some, crocheted & read.
Jan 27th Tues.-48+ to 40+,nice SW breeze-I washed & dried clothes outside. Ray put his saddle mare in our pasture. Mildred here awhile. Conolly's stopped see to the deer head.
Jan 28th Wed.-17+,blizzard, till afternoon-I ironed, worked on Gary's pants, read & crocheted. Men did chores. Al worked on lessons.
Jan 29th Thurs.- 13+,cloudy, some snow-Men did chores & fed cattle. Al worked on lessons. I crocheted & read. We caught four hens at night.
Jan 30th Fri.- 18+,cold & partly clear- We scalded & picked four hens. I dressed & froze them. Al went to town in afternoon.
Jan 31st Sat.-6+,to16- at night, partly cloudy- I cleaned house & washed my hair. Men did chores & rested.
February 1959
Feb 1st Sun.- 16+,clear & bright- Gib & I went to Rays in afternoon. Allen took us to church at night.
Feb 2nd Mon.- 38+,blizzard, till about 2PM-I crocheted, read & patched Gib's coat. Baked bread. Allen has a cold.
Feb 3rd Tues.-38+,overcast & windy-We had planned to go to town after dinner, but it snowed, so we didn't go. I crocheted & read. Men fed cattle.
.Feb 4th Wed.-Snow & wind- We went to Lewistown at 10 to 11AM. Got stuck in snow four times. Got home a little after 5. I went to Dr. Culley.
Feb 5th Thurs.- 22+,clear & bright- Men did chores. I rested most of the day after my treatment yesterday. Mrs Jones came for eggs, here for supper.
Feb 6th Fri.-38+,blizzard in PM-I did some patching, read & crocheted. Men did chores. Al worked at lessons. Wrote to Ted, didn't send it.
Feb 7th Sat. -4-,light snow & cold, still-I cleaned house & washed my hair. Men did chores. Al didn't go to town.
Feb 8th Sun.-10- to 5+,clear & bright, still-I wrote to Ted's & Richard, crocheted & read. Al finished another lesson.
Feb 9th Mon.-16- to 6+, clear & bright-I baked two batches of bread, spice cake & cookies. Men fed hay to the cows today. Gib has a cold.
Feb 10th Tues.-10- to 6+, partly cloudy, still-I cleaned eggs, patched a rug, crocheted, read & patched underwear. Men did chores. Al worked on lessons.
Feb 11th Wed.- 10+,overcast, still-I put up my quilting frames & started to tie a quilt. Ray came for water.
Feb 12th Thurs.-34+,nice-I washed a few things by hand. Finished tying the quilt. Al hunted rabbits at night. Snow too deep.
Feb 13th Fri.- 32+,nice-I sewed around edge of quilt, read, crocheted & wrote to Harold.
Feb 14th Sat.-44+,wind & drifting-I cleaned house, washed my hair, read awhile, & cut Gib's hair. We all went to Mrs. Murphy's to finish up income tax. Then Al went back to town & out to G.E.B.J. hall to dance.
Feb 15th Sun.-30+,then 15+,blowing snow-Men got stuck with tractor in the snow. They drove over to Rays & then fed cattle. I baked a cake & made chicken soup. Wrote to Mae. Didn't got to church, roads bad.
Feb 16th Mon-22+,light snow all day-I got some stockings & old clothes out of the attic & cut up some for hose for rugs. Men did chores.
Feb 17th Tues.10+ to 20+,snow all day, still-Men brought all the cows home. I worked on braided rug & read awhile. Mail didn't go. No cars went by.
Feb 18th Wed.-18-, fog, 20+,still-I made cookies & doughnut, crocheted on bedspread, braided rug & read a story. Men did chores. Al worked on lessons. A few cars & truck went by.
Feb 19th Thurs.-10-, fog, still-Mail went this morning. I crocheted, worked on rug & read the mail. Men did chores & ground feed. Monte stopped in at night.
Feb 20th Fri.-20-,clear & bright 22+,still-Men shoveled through so they could drive over to Rays, where they were going to take Monte's horse down east for him, but the snow plow came out, so he took his own truck & Allen went with him. Gib watered, fed cows & calves. I let cows through the gate. I baked bread & worked on rug. Al went to Roy with Baumans at night.
Feb 21stSaturday-2+ to 40+,clear, still-I cleaned house, washed my hair & washed out Gib's underwear. Men did chores. Al went to town.
Feb 22nd Sun.- 32+,nice- Al got home at 11AM. I wrote to Ted's & Nellie & read awhile. Men did chores.
Feb 23rd Mon.-42+,nice, windy at night-I did a months washing, dried most of it outside. Ray came for water.
Feb 24th Tues.- 46+,thawing- Gib & I went to Lewistown & stayed overnight at the folks. Visited Gene's.
Feb 25th Wed. 40+,nice, thawing-We got our groceries & left for home about 11. Stopped at Stepans to leave the army picture & stayed for dinner. Got home about 3:30. Men cleaned snow off the north side of the house roof, because it was leaking through into the wash room.
Feb 26th Thurs.-36+,rain, wind snow flurries, nice thaw-I baked cake, cookies, doughnut & a pie. Started to crochet a cap for myself. Dampened clothes.
Feb 27th Fri.- 42+,nice,windy at night-I did my ironing. State snow plow came out & got Gib to show them the way to Kosir's. Came in for coffee.
Feb 28th Sat.- 52+,nice- I cleaned house & washed my hair. Al went to Lewistown before noon.
MARCH 1959
Mar 1st Sun.-52+,nice-Water everywhere. Dams full. Richard's came about 1 o'clock in the morning. We got up, then got to bed again about 2 A.M. Al got home around 4 A.M. We got up about 7:30, Richard up at 9. Rays came in afternoon to visit. Richard's decided to wait until morning to go while it is frozen.
Mar 2nd Mon.-36+,cool, thawed some-We got up at 3:30. Dick's left at 5:30. We went back to bed & slept till 7:30. Tired today. Men fed cattle north of dam. Muddy every place. I wound yarn & started my brown & yellow afgan.
Mar 3rd Tues.- 36+,cool, windy- Men started to clean the barn, 8 loads. I made cake & doughnuts.
Mar 4th Wed.-Cool & windy-Gib & I went to Lewistown. Al cleaned & bedded the barn.
Mar 5th Thurs.-44+,nice, then snow in PM-I didn't feel good, rested & crocheted. Men fed cattle east of house as it is so muddy every place.
Mar 6th Fri.-40+,thawing- Ray came to get help with a cow. I went home with him & Mildred gave me a permanent, then they brought me home. I have a cold.
Mar 7th Sat.-42+,overcast, thawing-I cleaned house, crocheted & read. Al went to town in afternoon. Patched overalls.
Mar 8th Sun.-45+,overcast, thawing- I made a pair of gray pants for Gary & fixed the waist on the brown ones. Crocheted & read.
Mar 9th Mon.-40+,thaw- Gib & Al took pickup to Lewistown to get wheels lined up. I baked bread & a cherry desert. Wrote to Alberts & finished Gary's pants. Rays came for water.
.Mar 10th Tues.-40+,nice-I made a pair of overalls for Stevie & braided on rug. We went to Legion Meeting with Rays. The man hauled water.
Mar 11th Wed.-40+,nice- I washed & ironed some. Men drained some water out of ditch which is running across the road. They hauled away all the animal carcasses, bones & a dead calf.
Mar 12th Thurs.-42+,light showers-I baked a mincemeat pie & cookies. Crocheted, read & finished ironing. Frank Southworth rode over today.
Mar 13th Fri.-27+ to 38+,nice- I didn't feel good all day. Gall bladder aches. Did some patching & crocheted. Looked through old magazines. Allen helped Frank dehorn heifers. We dressed a hen.
Mar 14th Sat.-25 to 33+,snow flurries all day-I cleaned house & washed my hair. Men hauled out some manure. Al went to Lewistown about 3 P.M. We filled out our assessment tax. Flesch's got stuck in the mud & Gib went to pull him out.
Mar 15th Sun.-22 to 38+-Al got home at 5AM. I baked bread & roasted a hen. We all went to church in evening to see resurrection pictures.
Mar 16th Mon.- 64+,quick thaw- Gib & I went to Lewistown, both went to Dr. Culley. Gib anemic again. We took Dad & Cora for a ride. Stopped at Cliff Marsh's in evening & they told us about their trip to California last winter.
Mar 17th Tues.-64+,snow gone, except drifts, nice-I gave Stella her permanent. Al washed our car. Gib harrowed our yards & road.
Mar 18th Wed.- 46+,cool, windy- I took some of the paper off living room ceiling. Rays came for water. Men took tin sides off pickup.
Mar 19th Thurs.-40 to 20+,chilly wind- Gib & I went to Lewistown. I cut Gary's, Dad's & Cora's hair. We both went to Dr. Culley. Then we stopped in Roy for Fellowship meeting & packed clothes for overseas. I came home with Rays. Al helped Frank in afternoon.
Mar 20th Fri.-Chilly, SE wind-I took more paper off ceiling & crocheted. Men worked on stanchion & corral.
Mar 21st Sat.- 68+,very nice- I cleaned house, & made cookies. Al went to Lewistown about 10AM to get teeth filled.
Mar 22nd Sun.- 45+,cooler, windy-We took Rays, Dorothy, & Katherine to Hobson with us to the Legion convention.
Mar 23rd Mon.-40+,snow- Al helped Frank Spray cattle all day. I worked on ceiling all day, then read & crocheted. Gib did chores & rested some.
Mar 24th Tues.- 46+,fog, then clearing- I worked on ceiling, till brother Harold came about 1 o'clock. Then we visited rest of the day. Al helped Frank all day.
Mar 25th Wed.-52+,cool SE wind-Men did chores, then we all drove down to the bridge. Came home & had dinner. Mildred came. Harold left about 3PM. I patched cracks in ceiling.
Mar 26th Thurs.-58+,nice SE wind-Mildred & I went to Dorothy's & we all went to town & cleaned the church, then took Mildred over to stay with Alice. I got home at 4:45. Ray helped the men dehorn our heifers, then Gib went to World War I meeting with Ray in Lewistown. I cultivated my flower beds. Al went to Baumans, then did chores.
Mar 27th Fri.-50+,cool, NW winds- 7 calves. I washed some clothes & ironed Al's shirt. I baked bread, rolls & cookies. I patched some cracks in plaster. Al went to Lewistown about 3 & was going on to Helena. We drove out to see the yearlings & brought a three year old cow in who had a calf later. Had 4 calves today.
Mar 28th Sat.-60+,very nice-Had 2 calves. Gib did chores, worked on drill & dragged the yards again. I cleaned house, washed kitchen windows & practiced hymns for Easter.
Mar 29th Sun.-49+,chilly, snow flurries- We got up at 5. Gib fed the cattle. We went to church. Rays rode with us, then we went to their place for dinner. The church was filled. l got home after 12PM.
Mar 30th Mon.-58+,chilly, cloudy-The men got Baumans horse & brought our horse home. Then they put the yearlings over north, put some (41) cows over south on Richards, some in our east pasture. Rays came & Ray led his horse home. Mildred drove the pickup home. I got the living room ready to paint.
Mar 31st Tues.-Windy-Gib & I went to Lewistown. Al helped Monte work on his tractor, then they did some welding on our pickup.
APRIL 1959
April 1st Wed.-66+,bad wind-I went to Mikes & got some tape to put around edge of ceiling, then Al & I painted the living room. Gib used spring tooth to stop some summer fallow from blowing & harrowed thistles off the flat. We all went to Mrs. Jones's at the school house for supper.
April 2nd Thurs.-46+,chilly wind-Allen helped Monte all day on tractor. I painted living room casings. Gib worked alfalfa fields.
April 3rd Fri.-67+,nice-I washed. Al helped Monte. Gib worked alfalfa fields. Baked Gib's birthday cake. Mildred came in afternoon.
April 4th Sat.-65+,strong wind-Men worked on new pickup box & cleaned drill. Al went to Lewistown about 2 P.M. I cleaned house, waxed floor, repainted some of the woodwork & put things back in living room. We went to Rays in the evening.
April 5th Sun.-75+,very nice-Al came home about 10AM. They looked at the cattle & loaded the pickup up with barley. I crocheted some, wrote to Ted's & Dick's. Al went to Roy in afternoon & didn't get back till nearly 4 in the morning.
April 6th Mon.-46+,terrible wind, chilly-I baked cookies, dampened clothes, ironed & crocheted. Gib worked summer follow strips & Al harrowed thistles off flat in forenoon. Looked at cattle.
April 7th Tues.-Chilly, windy-I made Gary a shirt for his birthday. Started to put pictures in album. Gib worked summer fallow in SE field. Al got barley cleaned & sowed some in alfalfa field
April 8th Wed.-25+ to 44+,snow flurries, cold- Gib & I went to Lewistown, got back at 2:30. Al finished sowing barley in alfalfa field in afternoon. Gib worked strips west of big dam. I put some more pictures in album.
April 9th Thurs.-12 to 44+,nice, cool-Al sowed wheat in SE field & strips. Then took the cows with calves over south of big dam. Gib worked summer fallow in north field. I put pictures in album. Southworths came in evening.
April 10th Fri.-Chilly-Mildred came & I gave her a permanent. We drove over to see Stella. Al sowed barley in north field. Gib worked on Sharps.
April 11th Sat.-20+ to 50+,cool SE wind- They worked on Sharps. I cleaned house. Richard's came about 2:30, went to town at 3 P.M., left the kids here. Al went to Lewistown. Monte came.
April 12th Sun.-68+,nice-Gib did chores. We all went to town for Gary's birthday dinner. Dick's went home about 5:30. We took Gene's to show. "The Shaggy Dog"
April 13th Mon.-Still in forenoon, then windy, sprinkled-Men sowed wheat on Sharps. I sprayed the trees & took down bedroom curtains to wash.
April 14th Tues.-56+,windy-Finished on Sharps. Gib worked strip on flat by road. Al took barley in to get it cleaned. I did a big washing. We went to Legion meeting.
April 15th Wed.-60+, cloudy, chilly-Al sowed barley by road & then worked on NW field. Gib did chores, looked at cattle. I baked a cake, cookies & ironed. Put up curtains. Korean vet came selling magazines.
April 16th Thurs.-34+,heavy snow all day-Didn't do much. Men fed some of the cattle & brought some home from south by big dam. Al worked on lessons. Sick cow had her calf.
April 17th Fri.-50+, cloudy, thawing, & muddy-I baked bread & rolls, cleaned eggs, used vacuum cleaner in rooms, crocheted & read some. Men brought Molly cow & her calf home.
April 18th Sat.-48+,cloudy-I cleaned house, mopped & dusted. Men did chores & fed some cows. Al went to Lewistown to Meet Ted's & Sonja. They are going to Prom in Roy tonight.
April 19th Sun.-46+, cold, cloudy, muddy-The kids all came home about 4 o'clock, slept till 11AM. We had a roast chicken dinner. The kids left about 1:30 as Ted broke an axle in his car. They went to Lewistown to put in another one. Al got home about midnight.
April 20th Mon.-45+,clear-Men took the cattle all over south on Richards. I crocheted & rested.
April 21st Tues.- 65+,nice, snow about gone- Gib & I went to Lewistown. Bought 50 chicks. Al washed his car & looked at the cattle.
April 22ndWed.-60+,nice, until about 5 o'clock then rain-We fixed houses & crates & put the chicks out with two hens. Men looked at cattle over south & brought three home. One heifer lost her calf, so they put the sick cows calf with here. Gib & Al went to Lewistown at 2 to get a motor for old pickup. I went to Mildreds.
April 23rd Thurs.-65+,nice wind SE, SW & NW-Harold Bauman came & helped work on pickup motor. I almost finished my apricot colored dress.
April 24th Fri.-7+,cold, clearing NW wind-Allen rode with Frank & took cattle out on range. Harold came, but it was too cold to work on motor. Gib rode over south to see cattle. I crocheted & read.
April 25th Sat.-48+,cloudy, chilly, windy SE-Allen went to Lewistown about 10:30. I cleaned house, washed my hair & baked buns. Went to Mildreds. I went to Alice & Bill Lettengarver's shower at night with Rays.
April 26th Sun.-72+,lovely-I went over south with Gib to see cattle, rested awhile, read & crocheted. Men did chores.
April 27th Mon.-62+,bad wind-I washed. Men worked on pickup. I hemmed my dress. Too windy to dry clothes.
April 28th Tues.-70+, bad wind-Mildred came & we made her coffee table. Men finished sowing barley.
April 29th Wed.- 72+,bad wind-We caught the baby chicks & put them in a larger chicken house. Men worked on pickup. I set out raspberries. Dick came in PM. & went to Lewistown.
April 30th Thurs.-Nice-Gib & I went to town. Got two new tires. Took Maxine & Gary down town then up to Ann's awhile. Stayed overnight at Dads. Ready to go to Great Falls tomorrow.
MAY 1959
May 1st Fri.-72+,nice,rain-We took Grampa to Great Falls to an eye specialist. Gib went to Dr. Hurd & I to Dr. Steele, skin specialist. We got back about 5:35, got out home about 9.
May 2nd Sat.-44+,windy, chilly, sprinkles-I cleaned house a little. Had a pain in my head all night & day. Al went to town about 10:30. Monte came. I got him dinner.
May 3rd Sun.-56+,nice-I drove Mildred & Lizzie to a meeting at the Z.C.B.J. hall in P.M. Gib drove over south to see cattle.
May 4th Mon.-45+,chilly, windy-Men cleaned some of the barn & looked at cattle. I didn't feel good, had a pain in my head. Started to paint a picture, washed my hair & fed chicks.
May 5th Tues.-46+, chilly, showers-I baked cake & cookies. Al went to Baumans. We had early dinner, then went to Lewistown to Curly Wilmore's funeral. Got home at 6. Got my hair cut short. Al looked over fences.
May 6th Wed.-50+,cold & windy, then nice late PM-Men looked at cattle, then tried to work summer fallow north, but too wet. Worked yard, west of house. I turned my chicks outside.
May 7th Thurs.-68+,lovely, clear & still-Men brought three cows home with sore teats. Went to Baumans in PM. & got power scoop. Mildred came in forenoon. I went over there about 3PM. & got a permanent. Cut Al's hair.
May 8th Fri.-78+,lovely-Al helped Frank brand all day. Gib rode over to see cattle. We planted some potatoes. I set out some plants in boxes & vases. Took out the hem in my apricot dress & shortened it.
May 9th Sat.-72+ to 48+,nice in AM. then cold & windy showers- Cleaned house & washed my hair. Al helped Frank till noon, then went to Helena. I cut Gib's hair. We went to Alice & Bill Lettengarvers wedding dance at Valentine
May 10th Sun.-Cold & windy-We did chores & rested some. Gib slept. Joe Kosir died. Ida came for Rays & us. We rushed over there, carried him in the house. Rays went to Roy to phone for ambulance. Wass came out & Gib went back with him to meet the ambulance. We brought Ida back with us & put her to bed.
May 11th Mon.-Cold & windy-We did Ida's chores. We took Ida, Stella, & Mildred to Lewistown. Ida made funeral arrangements. When we got home, Ernest Zahn's were at Rays & they took Ida home to do chores. She came here to sleep.
May 12th Tues.-54+, cool, some wind-Gib helped Ida do chores & then she & Stella went to town. Stella stayed with her at night. I washed. Al finished summer fallow north of the garden & looked at cattle.
May 13th Wed.-62+,nice, very little breeze-Al worked on Ackerlys. Gib worked it at noon. We drove up to Ida's & brought Stella home. Ida's folks came. I ironed some shirts & washed my hair. Ida came to tell Al to look at heifers.
May 14th Thurs.-Nice, but SE wind-Al finished Ackerlys & the he & Gib went up to see Ida's heifers. We all went to Joe's funeral, got home at six, had supper & then Al went to Ida's & Gib went to Styers. I went to Fellowship meeting at Charlottes with Rays.
May 15th Fri.-75+,nice-Gib & Al went to help put in Ida's crop. I rested & slept. Patched, wrote to Richard's & Ted's.
May 16th Sat.-78+,nice shower-I cleaned house & baked cookies. Al went to town.
May 17th Sun.-Showery-Ida's folks left this morning & Gib & I went up & stayed with Ida. Helped with chores.
May 18th Mon.-Cool, rain-Ida did chores, I went along. I cleaned her cupboard. She walked out to see heifers twice a day. Al cleaned sheds at home.
May 19th Tues.-Cool, steady rain at night-Ida did chores & looked at heifers. I cleaned house & got the meals & kept busy. Don Kalina rode over.
May 20th Wed.-Showers, chilly-Ida did chores & looked at heifers. I baked some sweet rolls, cookies & cake for my men. Gib & Al came up.
May 21st Thurs.-Showers, chilly-We did chores, then drove the jeep over home & Gib took us to town. We got home early & I went back with Ida.
May 22nd Fri.-Nice-Did chores & etc. Don Kalina rode over & Jim Kellner came. Ida & I pulled a calf in evening. Al went down with Monte.
May 23rdSaturday-70+,nice-Ernest Zahn's came over. After dinner, Ernest took me home & Ida & Marie came later. Marie stayed overnight with Ida. Allen helped Monte brand. Got home late. Gib did Frank's chores.
May 24th Sun.-Cool & nice-Al went to Lewistown after dinner. Gene's came out & we all drove over to Ida's, then came home & got supper. Ida came for Gib to help pull a calf. She came back & stayed here overnight. Don Kalina bought Ida's calves. Six.
May 25th Mon.-Cool, showers & rain-I went home with Ida. Don Kalina came about 3 & he & Ida took the rest of the heifers over to his place. Then he & Charlotte came back & hauled the milk cow & two calves over to his place. Ida & I drove over home in the jeep to our place.
May 26th Tues.-Rain-Gib took us to Lewistown today. Ida was sworn in as administrator. Got home at six. Ida stayed here.
May 27th Wed.-Rain-I went home with Ida, she look at cattle. We hauled some posts in for kindling. Al helped Spiroffs brand.
May 28th Thurs.-Showers-Ida dusted a bull for lice. We did up the work. Ida filled her tanks with water. We came home in the evening. Styers came.
May 29th Fri.-66+,nice-Ida went home & washed. Came back in the evening. I washed, ironed & cleaned house & washed my hair. Al helped Frank brand, then hauled out a big pile of manure. Rays came.
May 30th Sat.-Cloudy-We took Ida to town for Memorial day services. Ted & Betty were in town. We all had dinner at Dad's & went riding & back to the cemetery, then got home at 7 P.M. Ida stayed here. Al & Ted's got home at 5AM. I baked cake & cookies.
May 31st Sun.-Nice, clear-Ida went home. Gib went to Don Kalina's, Vernon's & Jackies to tell them we were going to brand at Ida's Mon.. I baked bread. I set out flower plants. Ida didn't come at night so we drove up there, but she was at Myer's. Stella stayed with her.

June 1st Mon.-85+,hot-We all went to Ida's to help brand. Stella & I got dinner for 17 people. Ida brought Stella & I home & she stayed here.
June 2nd Tues.-92+,hot-We branded our calves. Frank & Murna helped. Stella & Ida here too. The men branded Rays calves in PM. I went home with Ida about 5 & stayed overnight. We drove out to see cows.
June 3rd Wed.-85+,nice-Ida & I drove out to see cattle, then came home about 10:30, she went on to Lewistown. Al worked summer fallow on Sharps. Ray came for water. Don & Charlotte brought Ida's truck home. I cleaned eggs. Baked a pie.
June 4th Thurs.-78+,nice- Al worked on Sharps until the tractor broke down. I baked two cakes & cookies. We all went to Lewistown about 5 for tractor repairs. Took Maxine & Gary riding out to the airport & watched a plane spraying. Then visited at Gene's till 10:15. Got home at 11:20.
June 5th Fri.-78+,nice-The men went to Lewistown again for more repairs. Brought out a mower Gib bought. I ironed. Ida came back from Lewistown & went on home. Came back & took Stella & I to Sandy & Jackie Styer's shower in evening. Al went back to town about 5.
June 6th Sat.-Nice, then rain-I cleaned house. Ida went home. She & Mickey put cows in big pasture. Ed plowed for her. Gib & Al put our tractor together. It rained & Ida got stuck coming back & walked in.
June 7th Sun.-Cool & rainy-Too rainy to go to Rodeo. Men got Ida's jeep home. We didn't do much. Ida started to paint a paint by number picture.
June 8th Mon.-78+,nice-I washed the kitchen. Ida went to Roy. The men braced my clothes line & cleaned corral.
June 9th Tues.-72+,nice, rain at night-Ida went home, came back in evening. I washed clothes. Men took Monte's Farm Hand home, then tried to plow but too wet. Don Kalina came & Al went over & helped him brand 7 of Ida's calves.
June 10th Wed.-66+,cool, windy-Ida took her jeep to Lewistown. Al helped Frank take his bulls out to the range. I ironed & washed windows. Gib took our bulls out on the range.
June 11th Thurs.-70+,nice- I washed windows, took down storm windows & put on the screens. The men put canvas's on baler. Al took hay wagon over to Baumans to do some welding. Ida came back about 6 & went on home in Pucketts car. Came back for the night.
June 12th Fri.-70+ to 85+,warm & windy-Ida went back to Lewistown to get her jeep. Gib & I went to Lewistown. Gib went to Dr. Culley & got his blood checked & to Dr. Johnson to get his teeth X-rayed. I cut Gary's hair. We took him & Maxine down town. Al worked summer fallow strips & on Sharps.
June 13th Sat.-90+,hot, then wind & a rain storm-The men finished the strips in forenoon. Ida came back & went on home. I cleaned house, washed my hair & sprayed the building for flies. Men finished on Sharps. Al went to Lewistown.
June 14th Sun.-Hot-We went to Rodeo in Roy in afternoon. Took Ida along. It showered on the way home.
June 15th Mon.- 80+,nice, shower-Al worked at Baumans on our hay rack wagon. Ida went home to fence. I cut weeds & grass around snow fence & made a dress. Gib went to Lewistown for repairs, got home at noon.
June 16th Tues.-80+,nice-Ida went home by way of Zahn's & baked bread & rolls. I baked cookies, cakes & bread. Finished my black print dress. Al worked on hay rack hitch at Baumans. Gib worked on mower.
June 17th Wed.-82+,nice-I helped Ida wash clothes. We stayed there all night. Gib went to Lewistown with Monte. Allen & Gib finished the wagon hitch.
June 18th Thurs.-90+,nice-Ida & I did some work, then came home at noon. Al plowed on Ackerly's. Ida went after Stella & I gave her a permanent in afternoon & Ida did some of her ironing. We went to a Fellowship meeting at Betty Siroky's in evening with Rays. Gib & Al helped Baumans put on a tractor tire.
June19th Fri.-85 to 90+,warm-Ida went home, came back at noon & went to Lewistown. I cleaned house. Al plowed Ackerlys. Gib cut down dead part of Chinese Elm tree, plowed at noon while Al ate dinner. Al plowed north at night.
June 20th Sat.-Al finished north field by noon, went to Lewistown in afternoon. Gib is sick with intestinal flu. I washed, ironed, waxed floors. swept & dusted again, etc. Ida stayed with Mildred.
June 21st Sun.-60+,cool, drizzly-I baked two lemon pies, made salad & deviled eggs & made a meat loaf. Ted, Betty, Sonja, her brother Nicky & his girlfriend Darlene came about 1:30 & left at 3. Al took Sonja back to Lewistown. I cut & raked grass around the house. Ida stayed here at night.
June 22nd Mon.-85+,nice-Gib & I went to Lewistown. I got my hair cut & went to Dr. Beatty. We got home at 4:30. Al mowed new alfalfa west of house. Ida came at night.
June 23rd Tues.-Warm-The men helped Mike brand. I helped Stella get dinner & then made a pajama top for Nannette & got home about 5. Stirred up some cookies, got Al a lunch, then he raked hays & Gib & I went to Rays for ice cream & Mildreds birthday cake. Ida stayed with Mildred.
June 24th Wed-76+,cloudy, shower, cooler-Ida went to Lewistown. Al mowed. Gib raked awhile. I cleaned silverware & knife drawer, baked cookies, made two pies, ironed & washed some clothes. I cut grass & raked for three hours.
June 25th Thurs.-78+,mostly cloudy & rain-Men baled hay & cut some more. I washed windows, car & pickup window. The new storm windows came. Al & I started to put one on & Mae & Harry came. Visited awhile then went to Rays. Alberts came about 5:30.
June 26th Fri.-60+,rain, wind-It is cool & rainy. Can't do much. We visited with Alberts. Rays, Mae & Harry didn't come over as it was pretty muddy. Bill showed pictures
June 27th Sat.-56+,strong wind, showers-We drove over to Rays about 9:30 & stayed for dinner. We all came home about 1:30 except Albert & Helen. They went to Roy, then came over at night to see pictures Bill showed again.
June 28th Sun.-64+, clearing-Ida left early. Everybody was here for dinner. Gene's came out about 2PM. We visited & took pictures. Ida came back in evening.
June 29th Mon.-76+,very nice-We all drove up to see the radar station on top of the mountain, except Al & Bill. Had dinner in Lewistown & came home. Alberts had supper at Rays & Mae & Harry here. Ida came at night. Al & Bill rode over south & chased some stray cattle, then Al went to Lewistown & Bill went to Myers. Tom rode Trigger in the evening.
June 30th Tues.-78+,warm-Al & Gib raked & baled hay. Albert & Helen drove over to Rays awhile then they all came back for dinner & supper. Tom rode Trigger. In afternoon we all drove over on Barta's old place to see a prairie dog town. Bill drove over to say goodbye to Myers kids. Ida came back in the evening.

July 1st Wed.-Nice-The men mowed, raked, & baled hay. I remade the beds, swept & cleaned house. Hoed some weeds & rested. Alberts & Maes left this morning. Ida went home & hauled out junk, then went to Lewistown & stayed all night. Men hauled water & drove over south to see cattle.
July 2nd Thurs.-98+,hot-I washed. Men raked & baled hay. Mildred came & gave me a Toni permanent. Ida came at night. Gib & I went to Roy for twine.
July 3rd Fri.- 60+,cool, rainy then clearing-Men raked & baled hay. Al went to Lewistown about 6PM. Met Ted coming out. Al went on to Helena. I swept, dusted & ironed. Ted came about 9:30. Ida stayed at Rays.
July 4th Sat.-Nice, cool-Gib & I went to Shrine circus, took Ted & Betty along. I cut Dad's hair. We got home about 8PM.
July 5th Sun.- 85+,warm-Gib went out early & baled some hay. I went to church. In afternoon we drove out on the range. In evening we drove down to see the wheat on Sharps & got stuck in a hole. Ray pulled our pickup out. We stopped & visited awhile. Al, Ted & Betty came out late.
July 6th Mon.-Warm, thunder showers, rain-Al mowed down some hay, then it rained. I cut out some clothes for Betty & sewed all afternoon. Ted & Betty went to see her father (Lynn Phillips) & had a time getting back in the mud. Ida came back in evening brought some hens to put in the freezer.
July 7th Tues.-60+,cool-I sewed all day. Too muddy to work in fields. Ida went home, then came back about 2 & then went to Lewistown to go to Missoula tomorrow.
July 8th Wed.-72+,nice, warmer-I baked all forenoon. Got dinner. The kids didn't get up till about 10. I made another maternity smock & cut out another one. The kids went to Roy about 4. Murna, Elizabeth & her boy came about an hour. The men raked hay & baled a little. Al went to Roy with Baumans to get some spark plugs for baler motor.
July 9th Thurs.-78+,nice-The men raked & baled some hay, worked some summer fallow strips. Ted & Betty went to visit Lynn after dinner. I made Betty another dress.
July 10th Fri.- 86+,warm-I made jelly, baked a cake & hoed weeds. The men finished working strips up south west, then Al mowed some barley. Ted & Betty left about noon to go to Lewistown & will go on to Helena Sun.. Mrs. Busenbark & Grandma Bauman came for a few minutes. Gib & I rested awhile after dinner, then I cleaned the house some & washed my hair.
July 11th Sat.-90+warm-Gib & I went to Lewistown. Al mowed hay on south Richards place & then went to Lewistown in the evening. Gib & I took Mildred's bed home.
July 12th Sun.-98+,too warm-Gib raked barley hay in forenoon. I swept, dusted, mopped & rested in afternoon. Al got home at noon. He raked & baled the barley in afternoon, then went to see if he could get some one to help stack hay. Gib & I drove over south in evening to see cattle.
July 13th Mon.-95+,hot-I washed & remade the bed. The men mowed, raked & baled hay on Richards place. Elizabeth & husband came for water.
July 14th Tues.-92+,hot-I ironed. Al mowed & raked on Richards. They baled all that was ready.
July 15th Wed.-95+,hot-Gib & I went to Lewistown. I visited with Anne. We got home about 5. Al mowed & raked.
July 16th Thurs.-83+,warm-The men rode over early to bring our heifers back from the Barta place. They mowed & raked crested wheat on Peterson's place. I took mail up, hoed weeds in yard, put up another storm & screen window, crocheted & rested awhile. Ida & her niece came & went on home.
July 17th Fri.-92+,hot, cool at night-I put on the third storm window & washed windows, made a smock for Betty. Mildred came & I pinned up a dress for her. The men cut & baled on Petersons.
July 18th Sat.-90+,hot-Men finished haying about noon. Al went to Lewistown to see if he could find a man to help stack hay. I cleaned house, baked cake, cookies, bread & rolls.
July 19th Sun.-97+,hot-We went to church with Rays. I washed our car in the morning. We drove over south & caught our cows going up the road. Jerry Siroky's came.
July 20th Mon.-95+,hot-Allen brought Tommy Harrell out from town & they stacked hay all day. Gib drove the pickup for them. Ida & niece, Mrs Frank Sears, stopped to get her frozen chickens then left for Missoula. I baked a cherry pie for dinner, watered the horses & carried water twice. Crocheted a little.
July 21st Tues.-86+,hot, partly cloudy, windy-Too windy to stack early so Al greased his own car. Then they stacked until a tire on hay rack blew out about 2:30, then Gib & I went to Lewistown & bought two new tires & two new ones for our car. I hoed weeds out of yard in morning. I hemmed (shortened) Gib's brown pants. Don Myers hauled in a load of cattle for us. We found 9 baby chickens & shut them up. Wrote to Teds.
July 22nd Wed.-90+,hot-Men stacked hay all day. I made a red smock for Betty, watered horses, fed baby chicks, washed a few things & made another apron. Boys went swimming at night. I made strawberry & rhubarb jam.
July 23rd Thurs.-99+,hot, still-Men stacked hay till noon, too hot. I made doughnuts & pies. I ironed a few things. Washed my hair & packed things so we could go to Glasgow tomorrow. Watered horses & carried water twice. Gib went to Roy. Men hauled another load of hay after 5:30.
July 24th Fri.-98+,hot-The men finished our hay about 8AM, then the boys stacked Rays hay. Gib & I left at 9:05 for Glasgow. Got up there at 2PM.
July 25th Sat.-92+,hot-In Glasgow, we had a picnic dinner out at Fort Peck Park & the kids went swimming. Then we drove around a lot got back about 7. Allen took Tommy Harrell back to town.
July 26th Sun.-104+,hot, strong wind-Gib & I left Glasgow at 12. Stopped at Saco Hot Springs & had lunch. Then at Malta to see Al Rothe, but he wasn't home, saw his son & sister-in-law. Got home about 6PM. Richard came to Lewistown this evening. Al went in to see him.
July 27th Mon.-96+ 53+,too hot, then cloudy & cooler-Al worked summer fallow north of dam. Deer fly bit him & his face swelled up so he rested in P.M. I cleaned house then rested awhile. In evening Ida & Rays came with ice cream & a birthday cake for me. Ida gave me an electric fry pan.
July 28th Tues.-73+,cool, windy-I washed. The men worked summer fallow one Ackerlys. In afternoon I gave Mildred a Pace permanent & put Ida's hair in pin curls.
July 29th Wed.-90+,hot-Gib & I went to Lewistown, took Maxine & Gary out to the horse show for a little while. I cut Gary's hair. We both took a treatment from Dr. Beatty. Visited the folks. Cora fell & cut her face. We had supper at Gene's, then went to a show. Al worked on the combine.
July 30th Thurs.-88+,hot-We are awfully tired. Al went to Lewistown for a combine tire. Gib worked on combine & rested awhile. I ironed some, wrote to Dick's & Ted's.
July 31st Fri.-Hot SE wind-We went to Lewistown. Saw the folks & went to the fair in afternoon. Al went to the fair, going to Helena tomorrow. We drove over to see cattle & looked at grain.

Aug 1st Sat.-97+,hot, short dust storm-We didn't do much. Gib rested. I cleaned house & ironed. Ray came for water.
Aug 2nd Sun.-97+,hot, SE wind-Gib & I went to church. Read & rested. Went to Rays in the evening. Al got home about 11:30.
Aug 3rd Mon.-90+,hot, NW wind-The men were ready combine but had to go to town for some repairs, so Al drove & Gib & Mildred went along for treatments. Gib has a lame back. They got back about 5 & combined until almost 8. I watered horses, baked bread & brownies. Wrote to Mae & Helen.
Aug 4th Tues.-96+,hot-Finished our piece of barley & moved to Rays. I helped Mildred get dinner & supper, then brought Gib home. His back is very bad.
Aug 5th Wed.-75+ to 55+,then cooler, partly cloudy-I took Gib to town to Dr. Culley. Al finished cutting on Rays & cut our wheat on Sharps. We got home at 1:30. Gib laid down & I read.
Aug 6th Thurs.-Nice-Al & Ray cut on Sharps. Gibs back got worse & I drove down & got Al to go to town & call Dr. Culley. He came out at 1:30 in the afternoon. Gib got worse again so Al went to town after 5 & got the ambulance to take us to Lewistown. We stayed at Gene's. Called Dr. Barelman.
Aug 7th Fri.-Nice-We called Dr. Culley to come & give Gib a treatment in the morning. He stayed in bed all day. I walked over to the folks for awhile. They drove over in afternoon. Dr. Culley came again the evening. Dr. Culley took me to his office for a treatment in the morning & Al came for me. We got some medicine for Gib, then Al went home. Maxine kept the neighbor kids.
Aug 8th Sat.-Nice-I talked to Dr. Culley on the phone. Gib stayed in bed all day. I helped Maxine. Al called in evening.
Aug 9th Sun.-Nice-Maxine went to church. We kept Gary. Gene worked all day. Gib got up in afternoon & walked around awhile. Maxine went on a picnic with her mother. Gene left his car at home for us to use.
Aug 10th Mon.-Nice-Gib & I drove up to Dr. Culleys office so he could have a treatment. Said we shouldn't go home before Thursday. We visited at the folks awhile. Al called in afternoon. We took the folks riding.
Aug 11th Tues.-Nice-Gib's back is hurting some again, so I called Dr. Culley & we went up for another treatment. We took the folks down town, first time Cora has been in a store for over a year. Had dinner at Dad's. Al came in for us, but we couldn't go home yet.
Aug 12th Wed.-Cloudy, light rain in town-We took Maxine & Gary down town. Went to Ann's for supper, took the folks along. Got home about 9 & watched TV at Gene's.
Aug 13th Thurs.-Cool, partly cloudy-We walked over to the folks this morning. I did a little cleaning. Helped Dad fix some book cases for Maxine. Gib went up for a treatment at 2PM. Al came in & took him up. We came home about 6. Al went to a chivarri for Ted Siroky.
Aug 14th Fri.-82+,nice-Al drove some cows out to our pasture over south & hung strips of crepe paper on car passes. Washed & polished his car. I swept the house. Unpacked our suitcase, & worked around the yard. Mildred came for some cake flour. Harold & Monte came in the evening. I wrote to Ted's & Albert's.
Aug 15th Sat. -Over cast sky-Al hauled water. They took Rays truck home. I cleaned house.
Aug 16th Sun.-Warm & clear-We all went to the river to the Bridge dedication with Rays. Dick's & Gene's were there. We stayed & had supper with Dick's & came home with Allen. Sharon came back with us.
Aug 17th Mon.-93+,hot & still-I washed clothes. Al combined the barley on the hill NW of the house. Sharon rode Trigger.
Aug 18th Tues.-Cloudy & cool-Gib, I & Sharon went to town. Gib went to Dr. Culley. We visited Maxine & the folks. Took Maxine & Gary down town for awhile. Al raked & baled some straw.
Aug 19th Wed.-80+,cloudy & cool-Gib & Al baled straw. I made Sharon a white jacket, made a cake, ironed & Sharon rode Trigger again.
Aug 20th Thurs.-Cool showers-Al went to Lewistown to the National High School Rodeo. I washed a few things for Sharon. Started a dress for her & sewed till 10PM. She rode Trigger in afternoon. We drove over south to see the cattle. Baked bread & rolls.
Aug 21stFriday-Cool, nice-Electricity off eleven hours. I washed my hair & Sharon's. Finished her dress. She rode Trigger in afternoon. Men baled awhile & worked on baler. Ray & Art Nelson came in the morning.
Aug 22nd Sat..-Cool-Al changed oil in his car. I made Sharon a school apron. Al took her home. Left here at 9AM. Gib & I went to Lewistown about 10:45 & went to the rodeo in PM. Visited Maxine for awhile then came home.
Aug 23rd Sun.-80+,nice-We rested & read. I dusted. Mildred came in the afternoon. Ida came back, then went back to Lewistown. Allen got home about 9:45PM. Brought Ronnie along.
Aug 24th Mon.-82+,mostly cloudy, shower-We killed & dressed five roosters. I baked rolls & doughnuts & ironed a dress. Al mowed some patches of hay & raked by the garden. I wrote to Teds. Ronnie rode Trigger & rode on the tractor & the rake.
Aug 25th Tues.- 80+,nice-We dressed six more roosters. I finished the ironing. Men baled straw & Al raked hay. Ronnie was with Al most of the day. Mildred came to get the men to help load cattle.
Aug 26th Wed.-80+,cloudy-The men finished baling hay, then Gib, I & Ronnie went to Lewistown. Gib & I went to Dr. Culley. I cut Gary's hair & visited the folks. Al used weeder on summer fallow strips.
Aug 27th Thurs.-84+warm-Al finished strips. I baked bread. Mildred came & we drove over to Myers. I cut Mikes & Stella's hair. Frank & Murna stopped.
Aug 28th Fri. -Al went to help Frank, till about noon, then he & Dad & Ronnie went over south to get some stray cattle out of pasture. I went to Mildreds & we drove over to Spiroffs & picked choke cherries. Muro Heil & his wife came in evening. I cooked the choke cherries. Al shot a skunk under the chicken house.
Aug 29th Sat.-78+,nice-Al rode out on range, then went to town after dinner. I canned 4 quarts of choke cherry juice. I cleaned house, washed out a few clothes for Ronnie, baked a birthday cake for Ida, made cookies, patched Ronnies overalls, & washed his hair. Ida came & went over to Mildreds. Gib & Ronnie drove over south.
Aug 30th Sun.-Nice warm-We all went to a Rodeo at Winnett. Rays & Ida came in the evening & we had ice cream & cake.
Aug 31st Mon.-80+,windy-I washed. The men hauled straw & hay & stacked it. Ida stopped & went on to Myers & Zahns.
SEPTEMBER 1959
Sept 1st Tues.-43+ to 62+,strong wind-Too windy to stack. Al worked on h is car & his lessons. Ida brought Stella over & I put Ida's hair in pin curls & gave Stella a permanent. Cut Al's hair. Did all my ironing after 5:30. Gib & Al went to Baumans.
Sept 2nd Wed.-63+,nice-We killed 3 young roosters & one old one & I cleaned & dressed them. Fried one for dinner. The men & Ronnie finished stacking straw. I baked a cake & cookies.
Sept 3rd Thurs.-87+,warm-Gib, Ronnie & I went to town, Met Clarks, Herb & Thelma & visited a couple of hours. Visited Maxine, had supper at the folks. I cut Cora's hair & Mr. Tottingham cut Dad's. We drove out to Roy & stopped at Marsh's & visited with Ray Marsh's, Clark's & Caulkins's until almost 11 o clock. Al helped Ray bale straw.
Sept 4th Fri.-81+,nice-The men raked & baled straw on Sharp's. Then Al went over parts of the summer fallow there with the rod weeder. I baked bread & rolls. I frosted a cake, washed windows, swept the floors & washed my hair. Ronnie rode Trigger awhile, & then went with Gib once, & played. Richard's came in the night.
Sept 5th Sat.-Nice-The men sat around & visited. Danny Dotson came in the forenoon & stayed for dinner. Dick, Margie & Al went to Lewistown. I kept the kids.
Sept 6th Sun.-85+, windy & warm-I made a cake & noodles & tuna to take to the picnic at the river. We all went to the river. Ray Marshs & Herb Caulkins were there, also Clairmont Clarks & Adeline's. Gene's came home & spent the evening.
Sept 7th Mon. -82+,warm-I roasted a rooster for dinner. Dick & Margie got some tomatoes from Mildred. They left here at 3:30 for Glasgow. About 4 o clock Genes came out. Gene fixed our baler. They went home about 9:30.
Sept 8th Tues.-60+,cool & real strong wind blowing dirt-I remade the east bed, swept the whole house, canned crabapple juice & jam. Cut Gib's hair. Mildred came & I pinned up a dress for her. Ida came back from Lewistown & went home. We went to Legion Meeting, took Dorothy along.
Sept 9th Wed.-73+,nice-I washed clothes & remade beds. The men baled straw on Sharps & finished Rays.
Sept 10th Thurs.-85+,warm-The men brought two cows & calves home to brand the calves. Ray helped. I drove over to Mildreds a little while. Then cut out a baby kimono & two jackets & sewed them up. Fixed a pair of pants for Al. Al went to Roy to sell some of his wheat & stayed in until late.
Sept 11th Fri.-95+,hot, SE wind, lightening at night-The men hauled all the straw from Sharps. I baked bread & two cakes, washed my hair & did it up. Fought a prairie fire at the Southworths at night, from 10 o'clock until 1:30AM.
Sept 12th Sat.-Hot-Al fixed some fence, then went to Lewistown before noon. Gib & I went to Lewistown in the morning with the pickup & got a load of firewood from Dad's. We went to the opening of the new bank building.
Sept 13th Sun.-Hot & dry-I shrunk some flannel, crocheted awhile & dusted. Gib & I drove over south to see if the gates were closed by hunters. Rays & Ida came in the evening, then Frank & Murna, Dick & Virginia came. I wrote to Ted.
Sept 14th Mon.-70+,cooler, NE wind-Men cleaned the chicken houses & the coal shed, unloaded wood & fixed fence. I ironed flannel & baked cookies. Frank came at night. Harry Wright brought fuel. Rays & Ida left for Minnesota this morning.
Sept 15th Tues.-46+,cold, light rain-Al helped Frank get some cattle in to take to town. Gib worked around the place. I cut out baby clothes & sewed awhile. We did chores at Rays & picked tomatoes & covered them. I painted a "No Hunting" sign.
Sept 16th Wed.-38+ to 23+,rain all day-I baked bread, sewed, crocheted, covered my roses & some flowers. Men carried in wood for stoves. I wrote to Mae & Copes.
Sept 17th Thurs.-41+,rain most all day-I washed my hair & did it up. Sewed on baby clothes for Betty & crocheted. The men read & did Rays chores. I cut Al's hair.
Sept 18th Fri.-41+ to 66+,heavy fog then clearing-Spiroffs left on a trip today & asked us to do chores. The men fixed some fences & looked at the cattle. I sewed & cut out two aprons.
Sept19th Sat.-70+,nice-Allen left to go to Helena. I cleaned house. Gib drove over to see cattle. Did Rays chores.
Sept 20th Sun.-67+ 20+,to partly cloudy, shower at night-We went to church. In afternoon I went up to Dorothys & she gave me a permanent. Some hunters stopped at our place.
Sept 21st Mon.-48+,rain all day-Too wet to do much. I crocheted & wrote to Don. We copied our records over in the book & checked all the slips. At night Lyle Mc Kenna stopped in for some gas.
Sept 22nd Tues.-42+ to 55+,clearing-Gib & I went to Spiroffs to do chores, plowed bad mud with pickup & stopped at Rays to do their chores. Allen came home from Helena about 1 o'clock & drove over to Rays looking for us.
Sept 23rd Wed.-67+,nice-Gib & I went to Lewistown. I went to Dr. Beatty, did some washing at the Econ-o-wash, & dried them at Maxines. Al fixed some fence. I sewed some at night.
Sept 24th Thurs.-Cool-I finished baby nighties & got packed to go to Helena. We went to Lewistown in afternoon where Gib had the car washed & greased. Allen got strep throat after we left. I cut Gary's hair.
Sept 25th Fri.-Cool, cloudy-We stayed overnight with the folks, took Cora to Dr. Culley this morning, & went down town to get her some medicine. Left for Helena at 9:45, got there at 3:20. Went to a drive-in show at night. Al had to go to Dr. Barelman for a penicillin shot.
Sept 26th Sat.-Cool, cloudy & rainy-Ted & Betty took us up to see Frontier Town, saw the Charlie Russell Art Museum, & drove around town. Al had to go back to Dr.
Sept 27th Sun.-Rainy-We went to church with Sonja. Betty stayed home with a headache. We all went to dinner at the Anderson's. Got home about 4, then Ted & Martin Mertz took us for a drive to Unionville & then the mountains. After supper we drove to Canyon Ferry Dam. I darned some sox for Ted.
Sept 28th Mon.-flurries, cold-Gib & Ted took our car down to get a brake fixed. We left at 11:05 for home. Stopped for dinner at Howdy Café at Great Falls at 1:10. Left at 2PM., got to Lewistown at 4. Saw the folks & Maxine & got home at 5:55. Al had been in to the Dr. again.
Sept 29th Tues.-20+ to 52+,clear, hard freeze-I swept & put our things away. The men did Spiroffs chores, then Gib & I went to Rays later.
Sept 30th Wed.-49+,cool-Al & I went to Lewistown. I to Dr. Culley, Al to get another Penicillin shot. We went up to Gene's at noon. It was snowing some in Lewistown. We got home about 3:10. I laid down & rested the rest of the afternoon. Ed Styer came for a few minutes.
OCTOBER 1959
Oct 1st Thurs.-50+,cool-I baked rolls & cat bread. Men put the heifers in west pasture & did Spiroffs & Rays chores.
Oct 2nd Fri.-58+,getting cloudy-Gib & Al rode out on the range & brought our two bulls home. Put a few cows in the holding pasture. I finished apron & crocheted some. Al's throat sore.
Oct 3rd Sat.-68+,nice-Al went to Lewistown to see the Dr. again. I cleaned house, washed windows, washed my hair & baked a cake & pie. Ted & Sonja came, brought Al home. He got worse by evening so we took him to the hospital. Gib came in later & we stayed with my folks over night. Spiroffs came home.
Oct 4th Sun.-64+,nice-We went up to see Al & took the folks riding. Had lunch at Eddie's Corner. Saw Al again, saw Teds & Genes. Had supper at Cora's, saw Al & came home.
Oct 5th Mon. -64+,cool, rain at night-I did a Big washing. Gib rode out on range, drove over south & did Rays chores. Shot an antelope. Mike came to see how Al was. Charlie Puckett died.
Oct 6th Tues.-28+ to 35+,cold & snow-Too stormy to do much. I ironed a little, rested & crocheted. Gib did chores & cut & carried wood to keep the house warm. Al got out of the hospital.
Oct 7th Wed.-28+ to 34+,light snow-I did all the ironing & baked bread. We did Rays chores.
Oct 8th Thurs.-26+ to 37+,clearing, cold-We went to Lewistown to see Allen & went to see Foster Pucketts. We got home about 3PM. Rays & Ida came home from Minnesota.
Oct 9th Fri.-45+,showers, hail & wind-Cold & stormy all day. I put blankets & quilts on beds & put sewing machine back in living room. Swept, dusted & washed my hair. Gib put gas in car & tractor, did chores, & rode over to Mikes. Al came home about 5:30.
Oct 10th Sat.-20+,cold-We all went to Lewistown in Al's car to Charlie Pucketts funeral. Mike went in with us. We went to a feed at the Eagles at 7. Mike stayed at Gene's. Al has a cold.
Oct 11th Sun.-17+ to 42+,cloudy-We didn't do much, but rest & read. Ed & Jack Styer came in the evening.
Oct 12th Mon.-32+,showers, overcast-Gib & Al rode out & brought some cows home. I made out an order for some shirts, sewed up some pillow cases & wrote to Teds. Stamped pillow cases. Don Myers came.
Oct 13th Tues.- 58+,nice-I baked bread & a cake, started to embroider pillow cases for Xmas. The men rode out & brought some more cows home. Ray came for water. We went to Legion Meeting with him. Ida & Mildred came from Lewistown.
Oct 14th Wed.-66+,nice-The men brought home a few more cows. I washed windows & put on four storm windows. Ida came took her jeep & went home, then came back & went to Lewistown. Al still sick.
Oct 15th Thurs.-Nice-Gib & I went to Lewistown in the pickup to get some coal. I went to Dr. Culley. We went to the Fellowship at Mrs. Satterfields in Roy on the way home. Al stayed in house all day.
Oct 16th Fri.-56+,nice-I didn't feel good, rested most of the day. Ida & Mildred stopped for the jeep. Gib rode out to get more cows.
Oct 17th Sat.- 66+,nice-I cleaned house, washed some windows & helped Gib patch the chicken house roof. Gib & Al put some of the cattle over in Rolphs pasture.
Oct 18th Sun.-72+,nice-I went to church with Rays, then in PM. we all went with them & Ida for a ride down to the bridge & beyond a ways.
Oct 19th Mon.-37+,cold wind, cloudy-I washed. The men hauled two loads of coal from Roy. Al helped Frank.
Oct 20th Tues.-51+,cloudy-I ironed, put up the drapes in the living room & baked bread. Al helped Frank. Men hauled another load of coal from Roy.
Oct 21st Wed.-52+,rainy, then clearing-I baked cookies. Gib & Al helped Don get his cattle in so he could take a load to town. Richard's came at midnight.
Oct 22nd Thurs.-66+,bad wind-The men went to Roy for a load of coal, then went hunting down east. I made Al's birthday cake. Margie frosted it.
Oct 23rd Fri.-62+,nice-Men went hunting down north & got 2 deer. We cleaned the house a little. We went to Mildreds, she had supper for us. Ida & Mrs. Wilmore stopped a minute.
Oct 24th Sat.-56+,windy-Gib & I cut up the half a hog he bought. Al, Dick & Gib picked 10 hens. Margie & I cleaned them. The men went hunting.
Oct 25th Sun.-48+ to 38+,cool & windy, shower-Rays came over & brought a big rooster for Margie. We packed some jars, the men skinned & cut up the deer. We had lunch & they left about 12:30. We all went to church to family night in evening.
Oct 26th Mon.-50+,nice, cool-Al went to Lewistown & we went in to little Dickie Kalal's funeral. Saw the folks & Gene's. Got home about 10:15.
Oct 27th Tues.-28+ to 52+,-Men fixed fence & helped Don get some cattle in again. I rendered lard, baked bread & washed the car.
Oct 28th Wed.-46+, partly cloudy-The men fixed fence around Steinfadts. I cleaned house, mopped kitchen & baked rolls.
Oct 29th Thurs.-35+,chilly, cloudy-Men drove to Roy to work on new fire house, but was too cold. I sewed & embroidered.
Oct 30th Fri.-46+,nice-Killed Don's old horse Tom. Men Fenced. I cleaned cellar & took out four baskets of jars & cases. Harold & Monte came in the evening.
Oct 31st Sat.-56+,nice-Al went to Lewistown. I washed. Gib took fence down by the stock shed. Mike & Stella came.
NOVEMBER 1959
Nov 1st Sun.-56+,very nice-Al got home about 6AM. Gib & I went to church. A George Ruckman came to see about getting some Model T parts. The men took out the posts down by the shed & mowed the weeds there. I put on a new storm window on our south bedroom window.
Nov 2nd Mon.-67+,windy-Harold B. came to get Al to help move some cattle down east. Gib worked around the place. Helped me finish the storm window. I washed some windows & ironed. Frank & Myrna came in the evening. The new teacher Mrs. Peterson came for water.
Nov 3rd Tues.-32+ to 35+,overcast, cooler, snow-I cleaned house & baked rolls. Gib cleaned up the post piles, etc. Rev. Dorsett came & we picked out some hymns for the rest of the year. Baumans brought Al home about 9.
Nov 4th Wed.-14+ to 16+,snow, cold, then clearing-Al helped Frank load calves in the morning. I shortened the sleeves on 6 new shirts. Baked biscuits & cookies. Men put chains on old pickup & drove over south & put the rest of the cattle in our pasture.
Nov 5th Thurs.-2+ to 30+,nice, cool-Gib & I went to Lewistown. I cut Gary's & Grampa's hair. We went up to see Mendenhal about our insurance. Al looked at cattle & fixed truck chains.
Nov 6th Fri. -26+ to 40+,nice-I cleaned house, baked a cake & cookies. Got ready for Ted's to come tonight. The men looked after cattle, & brought the two, two year old steers home. Ted, Sonja & Martin came about 1:30AM.
Nov 7th Sat.-Nice, cool-The men & Sonja all went up north hunting. I rested, worked & cooked supper. They got back about 5:30 with 2 deer.
Nov 8th Sun.-Nice, muddy-Richards came about 10:30. The boys went up the creek hunting & got a deer. Gene's came about 11:30. We all had dinner, 14 of us, then the men butchered a two year old steer for the boys. Margie brought us a lovely wedding cake to celebrate our 30th anniversary. The kids all went home in the afternoon. I swept the house & rested.
Nov 9th Mon.-Nice-Gib & I went to Lewistown. Visited with Nellie & Lewis & kids who were at Ann's. We went to the Bar 19 at night to a dinner & World War I meeting. Got home about 11:15.
Nov 10th Tues.-26 to 20+,cold, snow flurries-I swept & mopped almost all the floors. Embroidered on pillow case. The men changed oil in pickup. Al worked on his lessons. Harold B came.
Nov 11th Wed.- 20+,snow all day-Gib & Al went to the cattle sale in town. I finished two pillow cases. Rays stopped a few minutes. I wrote to Nellie.
Nov 12th Thurs.-2- to 5- to 20-,heavy snow-The men broke ice for cattle, did chores & ground feed. I embroidered & swept floors.
Nov 13th Fri.- 2+,clear & cold-The cattle got the gate down & came home, so the men, took the heifers back & put cows & calves up south of road. I embroidered on pillow cases for Xmas.
Nov 14th Sat.16 to 32 to zero, nice then snow-I cleaned house in forenoon. Ida & Mrs. Wilmore were here for dinner. Rays came & Mildred stayed & gave me a permanent. Al took her home after supper. Men worked on tractors & brought the cows home.
Nov 15th Sun.-10-,blizzard all day-Men brought the heifers in this morning. I crocheted a corner cross for a cloth for table in the church. Too stormy to go to church.
Nov 16th Mon.16 to 20-, clear-Men watered the cattle & put them south of the road, but they all came back. I embroidered, crocheted, & read awhile. Baked cookies & mincemeat pie. I wrote to Emily & Oscar.
Nov 17th Tues.-5 to 45+,chinook-I melted snow & washed. Men went to Roy for gas. Ida & 2 nieces came here for dinner & then went on home.
Nov 18th Wed.-nice-42+,Gib & I went to Lewistown. I to Dr. Beatty. Al looked at cattle.
Nov 19th Thurs.-Sloppy, wet-I swept floors & mopped kitchen. Did all the ironing. Gib & Al looked at cattle. Don Marso came & they looked at our calves then they took him up to Ida's. Rays went with us to Fellowship at the church.
Nov 20th Fri.- 46+,nice, thawing-I baked bread, cut out overalls for Stevie & sewed some. Al helped Frank in the morning. In PM they brought our cattle in to east pasture so they will be close for morning. Gib & Al went to Roy to call a hauler.
Nov 21st Sat. -40 to 30+, showers, froze some-The men brought the cattle in & I helped separate the calves. A semi truck came & hauled all 49 of them to town. Gib rode along & Al went in our car. I cleaned house & waxed living room. Didn't feel good all afternoon. Al went to Rays at night.
Nov 22nd Sun.-28+ to 36+,cloudy-Men did chores & fed calves. I crocheted. Rays came in forenoon for water.
Nov 23rd Mon.-31 to 38+,rain showers-Ed Styer stopped early to tell us they would bring Ida's calves down here to load. Then Ida stopped & then Don Kalina. It was too muddy so they can't take the calves out. Gib & Al went to town so Gib could get a treatment on his back. I baked rolls & cookies, worked on Stevie's clothes & used vacuum cleaner.
Nov 24th Tues.-50+,windy-Ray took a load of calves to town. Mildred stayed here & helped me. Washed windows. I hemmed a dress & finished Stevie's clothes.
Nov 25th Wed.-Cold & snowy, awful muddy-Ed, Jackie, & Don Kalina hauled some of Ida's calves over here. Gib took a load to town in Rays truck. They hauled the rest over & Al took a load in Ida's truck. Don Kalina, Lyle Flesch, & Jackie each took a load. Al drove Ida's car home at night, she & the girls stayed all night. I baked a cake & rolls & cleaned a hen for tomorrow.
Nov 26th Thurs.-Clear & cold-Thanksgiving Day Gene's & Mary came for dinner. Also Rays & Mrs. Peterson, the teacher.
Nov 27th Fri.- 32+,nice, ground froze-Gib & I went to Lewistown. Both went to Dr. Culley. I did my washing at Econ-o-wash.
Nov 28th Sat.- 42+,nice-Men put the cattle over on Rolphs. Rays came & took his truck home. I washed & ironed a few things & baked cookies. Packed our suit cases to go to Billings tomorrow where I have an appointment at the Clinic on Monday.
Nov 29th Sun.- 45+,nice-Ray brought Mildred over & we left here about 9:30AM. for Billings. We stopped in Lewistown, saw the folks & Gene's. Mary Heller rode to Billings with us. We stopped in Roundup for lunch. Got to Art Nelson's around 3PM.
Nov 30th Mon.-nice-35 to 45+,Art & Mae took us up to the Drs. Building at 1:45. I had an examination. Made an appointment for Gib tomorrow.
DECEMBER 1959
Dec 1st Tues.-60+,nice-I had to be at the Clinic at 8:30 for X-rays & blood tests. Then Art took us home. We had to go back at 2 for Gib's examination & to find out about my X-rays. We didn't get out until 7PM.
Dec 2nd Wed.-60+,nice-Art & Mae took us up town where we went through some big stores. Gib took us all to dinner down town. We left for home at 1. Got to Lewistown at 4. Went to the drug store, saw the folks & visited Emily Puckett & had supper at Gene's. Got home about 9:30. Al was in Roy.
Dec 3rd Thurs.-32 to 26+,light rain & snow-I unpacked & put things away, we rested some. Conollys stopped with the mail & said they had a deer for us, so we went down there in the evening & got it.
Dec 4th Fri.-32+,cold-Ray helped butcher our steer. I embroidered some on pillow case & rested awhile. Swept & dusted.
Dec 5th Sat.-42+,nice, cloudy-Al took the beef to town to be cut up. Don Myers came to see if we had seen a calf of his. I went with Gib to water cows & looked for Don's calf.
Dec 6th Sun.-52+,strong wind-Allen got home about 11. I went to church with Rays, we ate lunch in town then stopped at the Hall for Farmers Union Meeting. In the evening Al went to see Bob Cimrhakl & we went to visit the teacher.
Dec 7th Mon.-38 to 28+,cool, cloudy-Nick Spiroff came to get Al to help vaccinate calves. Gib killed three chickens & I dressed them. We drove over to Rays awhile. I embroidered.
Dec 8th Tues.-38+ to 28+,cool-Al hauled a load of cattle to town for Ray, then took in a load for us. Gib rested awhile between loads & took care of cattle. I didn't feel good. Patched my coat under the arms. Washed out a few things & ironed some. Ray here for dinner.
Dec 9th Wed.-40+,nice-We went to Lewistown. Had supper at the folks. Al worked on his car.
Dec 10th Thurs.-50+,nice-Men did chores. Took Rays truck home. I baked a cake & biscuits. Ray & Gib left for Malta to see Mr. Rothe. Al went to Lewistown to do some work on his car. Ida came in PM. & left again. Mildred stayed here. Wrote Xmas cards.
Dec 11th Fri.-47+,mostly cloudy-I did a big washing. Mildred went home & did chores. After dinner we went to Myers & I gave Stella a permanent. The men got home about 4:30. I wrote some cards.
Dec 12th Sat.-48+,nice-I cleaned house. Don Kalina came. Gib did chores & gave a calf penicillin. I washed my hair & went to Mildreds. She gave me a Quick permanent. In the evening Gib & I drove up to Don Kalina's, but no one was home. Came home & I crocheted on Diannes pillow case.
Dec 13th Sun.-34+,cool-We figured up our expense & income. Crocheted awhile. Mrs. Myers & Mrs. Peterson came. I sewed up 16 Xmas stockings for school.
Dec 14th Mon.-Gib & I cut up meat & canned 21 quarts. Froze several packages. Mildred came for some addresses. Mrs. Myers & the teacher came for me to make Xmas bag.
Dec 15th Tues.-60+,nice, mostly cloudy-I cooked the beef bones & canned six quarts of soup. Wrapped some packages. Al went to town for gas. The men set a post in fence near school house. We went to Mrs. Murphys to see about income tax.
Dec 16th Wed. -Gib & I went to Lewistown & brought home our meat & put it in the freezer. I wrote some Xmas cards.
Dec 17th Thurs.-30+,cool-I baked lots of cookies & packed Harold's box. Wrote cards. Al hauled four loads of wheat to town.
Dec 18th Fri.-44+,nice-Baked more cookies. Wrote cards. Al went to Lewistown. Gib did chores. We went to school program in evening.
Dec 19th Sat.-44+,lovely-I cleaned house, washed my hair & wrote cards. Went to program at Hall in evening. Al went to ball game with Ray. Al hauled wheat.
Dec 20th Sun.-38+,nice-We went to church. Ray rode with us. I wrote cards. We went to Bauman's in evening & I finished my pillow case.
Dec 21st Mon.-33+,nice, cool- Al hauled four loads of wheat. Ida came for a few minutes. I packed a box for Bob's, sent it with Al. Washed & ironed a few things. Wrote Xmas cards. (finished)
Dec 22nd Tues.-16+ to 24+,heavy fog all day-I made 2 batches of candy. Mildred came & I trimmed her hair. Al hauled one load of wheat. We all went to church program with Rays.
Dec 23rd Wed.-Fog till afternoon, chilly-Gib & Al did chores, then helped Baumans vaccinate calves. I ironed. Ray got grain loader. Harold B went to town with us in afternoon. Men went to stag dinner at Eagles. I went to Dr. Culley, then stayed with Dad.
Dec 24th Thurs.-37+,cool, frosty, then clear-Men did chores. Al helped Ray load wheat. Then Al took Gib to town with a bad toothache. I baked buns, put up Xmas decorations. No tree this year. Washed windows. We had our gifts at night.
Dec 25th Fri.-40+,lovely day-Men did chores. Gib's face all swelled. We left about 11 to go to Gene's for Xmas dinner. Richard's were there too & came out home with us.
Dec 26th Sat.-Strong wind-Richard's left about 10:30 to go back to Lewistown. Allen went to Lewistown after dinner. We rested.
Dec 27th Sun.-32+,overcast-I swept & dusted. Men put our cows over on Ackerlys. I crocheted & read. Men read & slept.
Dec 28th Mon.-32+,cloudy, windy-Ted's baby boy was born this morning. I was tired. Read, crocheted, rested, & darned sox. Veterinarian vaccinated our eleven heifers, then Al helped Frank & Spiroffs with theirs. Ray came for water.
Dec 29th Tues.-30+,cool-I washed. Men cleaned the barn. Al worked on his car. Gib & I drove to Roy to see if anyone had heard from Ted. Mildred came.
Dec 30th Wed.-28+,chilly-Al took pickup to Lewistown to get new tires. Put on two. Mildred & Ida came. Ida ironed for me. I baked cookies. We milked Mike's cow. Don & Stella went to town to call Mike who is in the Columbus hospital. Al worked on his car in evening.
Dec 31st Thurs.-20+,cold, snow at night-Vernon came to see if I'd keep the kids. I cleaned house. Al finished his car. Vernon's brought the kids about 8. Al went to Roy dance.
